I thought it was important to record every little flickering and fleeting emotion of my post-adolescent life.
Then my friend became an editor for college essays. The other day she says to me that if she has to read another god damned premature memoir she will projectile vomit. Whereas the concept of projectile vomit is still (and may always be) hilarious to the both of us, I figured this is a bad thing. It hit me like a brick. More like, I walked into the brick wall directly in front of me that I had been ignoring. People know how to write about themselves. And other people are sick of it. Not the funny sick. The putrid sick. Somehow I thought that I would be able to take my experiences and manage to not write about them, but still use them when I wrote.
So I say to myself "20 years old is nothing, unless you still think you're 13."
It's time to pack up. It's time to condense. If I'm going to put off spring cleaning any longer, I'm going to have to prove that I've kept all of my tchotchkes for a reason.
I use it or toss it and pray the shit I've learned and remembered is of some consequence. And I don't waste another valuable minute on autobiographical writing. Hah.
